After A manhunt, police have arrested two Young Dolph murder suspects

Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the November 17 shooting death of rapper Young Dolph in Memphis, Tennessee. Justin Johnson, 23, was apprehended by the US Marshals Service on Tuesday afternoon, over a week after authorities stated he was wanted for a variety of offenses, including first-degree murder, criminal attempted first-degree murder, and property theft.

According to Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich, a second defendant was indicted by a grand jury on first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of the Memphis rapper on Tuesday.

Cornelius Smith, 32, was also charged with attempted first-degree murder, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, using a firearm to commit a violent felony, and property theft. He is being held incommunicado.

The attempted murder charge is against Young Dolph’s brother, who was with the rapper when he was killed.
According to the US Marshals Service, Smith was detained on Dec. 9 in Southaven on an auto-theft warrant concerning the white Mercedes Benz automobile used in the killing of Young Dolph. The car was stolen in a carjacking at a gas station on Nov. 10 and was discovered three days later, behind a property in Orange Mound, where a tipster indicated it had been abandoned.

Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., was shot and died in Memphis on Nov. 17 while visiting Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies, a South Memphis bakery he frequented. He was 36 years old at the time.

The rapper rose to notoriety in the indie hip-hop scene during the last decade after releasing a series of mixtapes and launching his record label, Paper Route Empire, in 2010.
Dolph was born in Chicago but raised in Memphis, and his debut studio album, “The King of Memphis,” was released in 2016.

Last month, Dolph was remembered at a public memorial at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, where fans and community members gathered to pay tribute to the dead rapper a month after his death.

Friends, family, community leaders, and aspiring artists remembered the rapper as a family guy, a trailblazing creative, and a philanthropist who was dedicated to service and had a strong connection to his community.
