Connecticut is the first state to have half of all adults fully vaccinated. Data released Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed the nationwide pace of daily shots continued to decline from peak levels.
At the same time, the US outbreak is showing signs of slowing, with reported cases, hospitalizations and deaths trending downward. Over the weekend, the rate of daily infections fell below 50,000 a day for the first time since October.
US percentage of the vaccinated population
Among Americans 18 and older, 56% have received at least one dose of vaccine and 41% are fully vaccinated.
Connecticut reported Monday that half of its adult residents have a completed vaccination program, according to the CDC.
“This is an extraordinary achievement that will allow the reopening to proceed in a prudent manner,” Connecticut governor Ned Lamont said at a news conference on Monday.
The vaccination rates vary depending on the state. In New Mexico, South Dakota, Maine, and Vermont, 48% or more of adults are each fully vaccinated, while that number is below 33% in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama.
US vaccine shots administered
The nationwide pace of daily shots continued to decline from Monday highs to an average of 2.3 million reported vaccinations per day from a high of 3.4 million on April 13.
The slowdown is due to the fact that meeting the demand for vaccines is no longer the main challenge facing the country. States are deploying strategies to remove barriers to entry and reluctance, including public relations and educational programs.
Some states also offer vaccination incentives, including free beer in New Jersey and $ 100 savings bonds in West Virginia.
US Covid cases
The US reports 49,500 new infections per day based on a seven day average compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The country had an average of more than 70,000 cases a day in mid-April.
In most states, the average daily caseload has decreased by 5% or more over the past week.
US Covid deaths
As of Monday, the 7-day average of daily deaths in the US is 670.
More than 577,500 deaths have been reported since the pandemic began.
