Crimes against Asian Americans have escalated in New York and throughout the world since the pandemic began. Over 10,000 incidents were recorded in the previous two years alone, according to a recent nationwide poll done by the NGO “Stop AAPI Hate.” Race was the most prevalent basis for discrimination, accounting for 91.5 percent of the 10,905 complaints. Last week, a man was charged with attempted murder in a “brutal hate crime” against an Asian lady in New York state, with footage of the event showing the victim being pummelling over 100 times.
Tammel Esco, 42, was arrested on Friday in Yonkers, New York, for reportedly making racial remarks to a 67-year-old Asian woman, chasing her into a building, and beating her 125 times. Officers arrested Esco when he was still outside the premises a short time later. On Monday, Yonkers police confirmed the arrest, and security video from the building’s main door was released. The woman was attempting to enter the lobby’s second door when she was smacked on the head from behind and fell to the ground, according to the video.
She was stomped on seven times, kicked seven times, beaten 125 times, and spat on seven times. The unnamed lady, according to investigators, is stable and recuperating in a hospital. She sustained facial bone injury as well as a cerebral haemorrhage. Officials believe he used a racial insult against her before the event. Tammel Esco was arrested and accused with a variety of offences including hate crimes, assault, and attempted murder. His mugshots have yet to be released to the public.
According to jail records, he was arraigned on Saturday and remained in the Westchester County Jail on Monday. According to officials, Esco has a criminal past and has served time for assault.
